Online learning has revolutionised learning.

The word is your classroom.

EASST ACADEMY

I worked with the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport in Europe on a few global projects. The example below was a brief (on behalf of Cranfield University) to create a course for delivery and fleet drivers. Companies like Tesco pay for their managers and drivers to do it, ensuring gold safety standards.

So I soaked up academic reports, case studies and data to devise easy-to-understand modules

Road Safety Scotland

The Ziggy series teaches road safety through story and the books are used in every nursery and primary school in Scotland. Ziggy has evolved into a full suite of online activities, a ‘Travelling Ted’ type backpack resource with a toy and diary, and special visits from the alien himself - albeit a much bigger version. He’s also exhibited in Glasgow’s Riverside museum.

There’s more Ziggyness on the Storytime page.

I worked with the brilliant design team at Whitespace to develop a series of interactive games. Designed to get young people to think about their attitudes and behaviour as pedestrians, as passengers and as future drivers.

The Text Test hammers home just how long your eyes are off the road when replying to even even the shortest text. (Which obviously no-one should be doing.)

What Would You Do lets you take over Dougie’s morning routine. The idea was to show how making poor decisions could have catastrophic consequences.

There are more games in the series. Click on an image if you’d like to play.

Teachers’ Notes

I also worked on the accompanying notes to go with the interactives to help guide the learning. Clicking on the image will take you to the site.

Facts, facts and more facts…

I like putting the fabulous into facts. Finding interesting angles and chunking info is a great way to help people learn.

App games

This real-world exploration app mixes reality, fiction and a gaming element. You’re given a quest and a starting point. From there you have to unlock clues in your real-world location to get to your next destination. Each place is brought to life in your imagination through a vivid narrative. The storytelling is based on real characters and real events giving you a perspective that you won’t find in any guide book.

I’ve created two of these games: Haunted Glasgow and The Mysterious Force Field. I come up with the idea first, then research places that fit with the narrative, then work out the clue/answer element. From there I build the story, creating fictional characters who become the guiding voice. And finally, take photos of each location which features.

There are levels within the app where you can compete against other players - speed wins. You can also earn points to redeem against other games.
